Half-empty venue in US, people didn’t stand for national anthem: BJP leaders use video to blast Rahul Gandhi

By India Today News Desk: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is in the US, has been making headlines for his blistering criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led Centre while on foreign soil. Rahul Gandhi has come under fire from the BJP for his outspoken remarks, and on Day 2 of his America sojourn, the saffron party found fresh ammunition to flay the former MP with.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala took to Twitter and shared a video that purportedly shows an NRI outreach organised by the Congress that Rahul Gandhi attended. Poonawala claimed, “During national anthem half of the people Rahul addressed later did not even bother to stand up. Later they paused the national anthem in the middle and said it was just 'Mic Check'.”

Poonawala demanded a clarification from the Congress over the alleged incident. “The onus is on Rahul Gandhi’s organising team to clarify if and why this disrespect was done? Who are the audiences who disrespect the National Anthem! No Indian would.. is Anthem used for Rahul’s mic check?(sic)”

India Today found the viral video was clipped out of context. It was shot during a mic check, and not the actual performance of the National Anthem.

A keyword search on Twitter led the fact-check team to an extended version of the video, which, too, was shared with a similar accusation. In it, as soon as the anthem began, a woman at the mic gestured at everyone who stood up to pay respects, signalling them to remain seated. The anthem then stopped mid-way and the woman informed the audience that it was just a mic check.

Several BJP leaders were using the video to attack Rahul Gandhi. The clip was earlier tweeted by Anil K Antony, son of former Union defence minister AK Antony, who quit the Congress and joined the BJP in April.

“Half empty venue where 80 % of the crowd are sitting or disrespectfully lounging around with their hands in their pockets while India’s national anthem is being played (sic),” Anil K Antony wrote.

Half empty venue where 80 % of the crowd are sitting or disrespectfully lounging around with their hands in their pockets while India’s national anthem is being played. Not surprising.

He claimed the disrespect to the Indian national anthem was “not surprising” as the event was co-coordinated by organisations that push anti-India narratives and allegedly have “radical Islamist links”.

The Congress has yet to respond to the BJP’s allegations.

Rahul Gandhi is in California, US, on a three-city tour during which he will interact with the Indian diaspora and meet American lawmakers. Overseas Congress chief Sam Pitroda said Gandhi's visit is aimed at promoting shared values and a vision of “real democracy”.
